Key Features

Fitment

This Vehicle-specific design catalytic converter kit covers the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Trax plus the Buick Encore — all built on GM's Delta and Gamma platforms sharing the same 1.4L turbocharged LE2/LUJ/LUV engine family. One part number covers a decade of GM compact vehicles.

Restores Catalyst Function

A failed catalytic converter on these 1.4L turbo engines triggers the P0420 code, illuminates the check engine light, and hurts fuel economy. This replacement restores proper three-way catalytic conversion, resolves the CEL condition, and recovers drivability and engine efficiency.

Stainless Steel with Precious Metal Catalyst

Stainless steel housing wraps a honeycomb ceramic/metal substrate coated in platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The uniform catalyst coating ensures consistent conversion of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. Even load distribution and controlled operating temperatures extend service life compared to a worn factory unit.

Complete Kit

Ships as a complete catalytic converter kit with gaskets and mounting hardware for secure flange mating. Everything needed for the replacement is in the box — no extra trips to the parts store for missing fasteners or seals.

Emissions Notice

Intended for federal-use applications where permitted. Not for vehicles registered in CA, ME, CO, or NY. Verify local emissions and inspection requirements before purchase. Cannot be sold or shipped for vehicles registered in California, Maine, Colorado, or New York. Confirm your local registration rules and vehicle fitment before purchasing.

Description

GM's 1.4L turbocharged engine powers some of the most popular compact cars on the road — the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, Trax, and Buick Encore. When the catalytic converter degrades on these high-mileage vehicles, you'll see a P0420 code on the dash and notice rougher idling and worse fuel economy. This AMVirtuo catalytic converter kit replaces the failed unit and puts your car back to proper running condition.

The converter uses a stainless steel body for rust resistance, housing a honeycomb substrate with a triple precious metal catalyst coating (platinum, palladium, rhodium). This is the same catalytic chemistry the factory converter uses — just fresh. The vehicle-specific design bolts to your existing exhaust manifold and downpipe with no cutting or welding.

The heat shield from your original converter is not included in this kit — reuse your factory shield if it's intact, or source one separately if it's damaged or missing.

Installation Notes

Professional shop installation is recommended to guarantee proper torque, leak-free sealing, and reliable exhaust manifold connection:

  • Pre-Installation Check: Inspect your exhaust system for leaks and check that the turbo-to-manifold connection is secure. Exhaust leaks upstream of the catalytic converter can allow unburnt fuel to overheat and damage a new converter. Also verify your oxygen sensors are functioning before replacing the converter.
  • Bolt Removal: GM uses thread-locker on exhaust flange bolts from the factory. Apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes before attempting removal. Broken exhaust bolts are the most common issue during catalytic converter replacement on these vehicles.
  • Gasket Installation: Always use a new gasket — never reuse the old one. The included gaskets are designed for the exact flange dimensions of this converter.
  • Torque: Tighten all flange bolts to the manufacturer's recommended specification in a crisscross pattern. Over-tightening can warp the flange and cause leaks.
  • Code Clearing: After installation, clear the P0420 code with an OBD-II scanner. Drive the vehicle normally for 50-100 miles to allow the catalyst readiness monitor to complete its self-check cycle.

Pro Tip: The Chevy Cruze and Sonic have very tight engine bays, and access to the upper converter flange bolts is limited. Many mechanics prefer to loosen or remove the front engine mount and carefully rock the engine forward a couple of inches to gain access. This takes an extra 15 minutes but saves significant frustration.
